What to do in the event of a car incident

Have you just been in a car accident? Don’t panic, we’ve got you covered. This page has been designed to guide you through the process of an automobile claim, whatever the situation. Consult the different scenarios below to learn about the steps to follow in the event of an automobile claim.

Take a look at the following scenarios to find out what to do in the event of a car incident.
  • Take photos of the accident scene and damage. Please remain safe at all times and avoid standing on the roadway.
  • Contact the police to report the incident and keep the police report number (event number).
  • If the animal is injured, inform the police.
  • The emergency services will be able to guide you in requesting the services of a towing company if required. Keep their contact details if possible.
  • Let us know so we can validate your coverage and inform your insurer.
  • Make sure no one is hurt or injured.
  • Contact the emergency services, especially if you notice damage to anything other than your vehicle (road sign, guardrail, etc.).
  • If the authorities are unable to respond, we recommend that you complete a joint report with the other driver involved. If this is not possible, exchange information: names, telephone number, address, driver’s license number, vehicle info (make, model, year), names of respective insurers and insurance policy numbers.

A flooded vehicle may not be safe to drive.

  • Try to identify whether: the mechanics of your vehicle have been affected (engine, transmission, electrical circuits, pictograms visible in the dashboard that weren’t before) OR water has reached the interior of your car (look for wet carpets, the smell of dampness and mildew, rust).

If liquid leaks from your vehicle after an incident…

  • Contact the emergency services.
  • Try to contain the leak or make a barrier to stop it spreading, only if it’s safe to do so.
  • Take photos.
  • The emergency services will be able to guide you in requesting the services of a tow truck if required. Keep contact information if possible.

Make sure no one is hurt and get to safety. Afterwards:

  • If you can extinguish the flames safely, attempt to do so.

  • Keep any debris or parts that could be linked to the cause of the fire, if possible.
  • Note the date and time of the incident, and keep your vehicle keys.
  • List any damaged personal effects in your vehicle. Depending on their value, it may be necessary to file a claim with your home insurer as well.
